IMPAC Regional Meeting
October 25, 2003
Notes
Burning Issues
- Coordination of courses between Community Colleges (for transfer
and also because so many of our students go to more than one Community
College for courses)
- In general, lack of a "Child Development" major at
the CSU's
- Get CSU's and UC's to recognize a 2 year Associate degree as
preparation for a major
Update on
where we are
- Last year's meeting IMPAC didn't include Human Development
- There seems to be a problem with "Early Childhood Education"
being the title of the group instead of Human Development or something
else that Universities would recognize.
- TOP Codes issue. Lin Violet has worked with this issue in the
context of the Fashion and Consumer Sciences. One part of that
discussion was whether to split out Infant/Toddler and School
Age in TOP Code categories. There will be information about this
in the CCCECE Newsletter.
- CAN Currently we are under FCS. We could change and get a CAN
number system for Child Development/ECE. This would make it more
connected to the Psychology and Human Development Department offerings
at the Universities.
- We looked at a chart of the CAN numbers currently under
FCS. CAN FCS 14 Child Development fits for our theory classes
conception through adolescence. CAN FCS 24 Child, Family &
Society fits for our Child, Home/Family, School/Community
classes. However, CAN FCS 12 Family Relations seems to be
more specific to the study of the family.
- At SJSU, Toni Campbell is making changes to the major and wants
to discuss course to course articulation (which hasn't been possible
before).
- There are NAEYC and NCATE Standards for Early Childhood Professional
Preparation to determine what the core knowledge is for the field.
We also have our competencies, developed in the process of designing
the matrix. These key concepts or core need to be shared with
the CSU's and UC's.
Goals for
this meeting
- Come up with an identifying name for this cluster group for
IMPAC
- CAN identification for our courses - possibly under Psychology
or Sociology for some of our courses.
Additional
information
- Packard Foundation and the State First 5 are working on "Preschool
for All" to be on the ballot in 2006. They have been doing
focus groups of providers, but college folks didn't know about
it. The idea is to use existing infrastructure (like school districts).
BA will be require for treach3rs connected to school districts.
Perhaps a blended degree-possibly resurrecting the Early Childhood
Credential-including Early Intervention Competencies. Marci Whitebrook
has a new study out on the efficacy of our training. State First
5 will have an RFP coming out soon to do pilot studies. Someone
mentioned that one district in LA is already doing this. Possibly
Alisal in Salinas is, too.
- The sole representative from the CSU system (they were notified
very late) Rob Weisskirch from CSUMB brought up a system wide
issue that there are not a large enough number of students coming
to the University to major in ECE/CHDV. This makes it difficult
to design a program of study if there are only 12 - 15 people
in the major. Rob did say later that it is possible for someone
to come to CSUMB and design their own major.
- A question was raised about School Age Child Care Providers,
will they need a BA under the "Preschool for All" program,
or is this even addressed?
- In Head Start, everyone by 2008 will need a BA.
- What about ESL students?
- What do child care teachers need to succeed?
Name for
IMPAC group
After generating several ideas, the following options were voted
on:
- Child Development and Early Childhood Education
- Human Development
- Child and Adolescent Development
- Early Childhood Education
Child Development and Education
Unanimously, it was decided to call our section Child Development
and Education (No one voted for any other option).
CAN Discussion
Clearly we need to expand our course CAN numbers to additional areas,
like Psychology and Sociology. The Power of CAN is important--What
courses would work for transfer to the Universities.
TO DO: Send out CAN numbers for Sociology
and Psychology and Technology, like the handout we got for the Family
and Consumer Science Courses that Carole E. Lee put together. This
could enable us to see which of our courses we could connect to
those areas. We do have a breadth of lower division courses. Which
ones could fit into GE and the majors? To have a course qualify
for a CAN number, you need at least four CSU schools in the whole
state to have a similar course which would fit into the CAN.
We need to look at our CORE courses and see if they could be rewritten
to become GE courses. For instance, Gavilan did this for their Child
Family an Community class.
TO DO: Marlene will send out
their course outline. Other possible courses: Health Safety and
Nutrition and Cognition and Communication (this one under critical
thinking GE). We all agreed that just having more under AREA E 3
unit electives was not that helpful to our students.
TO DO: Get appropriate courses
certified for the existing CAN categories.
Linda Cochran from WestEd offered
to host a regional meeting with the CSU's, UC's and community colleges
to discuss this articulation and Child Development BA program all
together. CUSMB, SJSU, SFSU, and Hayward, UCSC and Berkeley
(?)
(Marlene, and additional thought: see if in the southern region,
like CSU Northridge they might have been successful with this articulation.
They might come up an give some advice?)
NOTE: It is extremely important to
work with our Articulation officers on these issues.
