Subject:
November 5th! Mathematics IMPAC conference at Sacramento
State
Greetings,
IMPAC is a California project organized by the
faculty Senates of the UC, CSU and CC systems
to improve the transfer preparation and articulation
of community college students in the major disciplines.
If there is another member of your department
who is involved seriously in the transfer process,
please forward this message to that person.
This message is about the IMPAC conferences in mathematics for 2005-2006.
This year the IMPAC conferences in mathematics will have a new look based
in part on the recommendations of last year's participants to have more
local conferences with greater opportunity for faculty to make more lasting
connections.
The major objective
of these conferences will be to increase communication
between the college and university faculty through
meaningful exchange of information. The intent
is to create a greater sense of a mathematics
community that will benefit the students at the
community colleges who plan to major in mathematics.
College faculty will be able to learn more about
what is going on at the universities including
the CSU Lower Division Transfer Patterns (LDTP)
Project and the UC Major Preparation Programs
while the University and college faculty will
be able to share more about how crucial mathematics
lower division courses are being taught.
Participation from the Community College, CSU and UC mathematics departments
will help make this the most successful year for achieving improvement for
articulating transfer students and their courses in mathematics. Each department
should send at least one and possibly two members to at least one these meetings-
someone with the responsibility of making articulation agreements and someone
with responsibility for advising transferring students.
As of today, six math department chairs have responded to my calls to host
IMPAC local Mathematics conferences in 2005-2006; Sacramento State, San Francisco
State, CSU Dominguez Hills, CSU Stanislaus, CSU Monterey Bay, and UC San Diego.
As a result, the
first of these conferences will take place on
Saturday, November 5th, on the campus of Sacramento
State University. I am happy to invite you to
attend or send a representative of your mathematics
department to attend this conference.
