Meetings for English Discipline 2005-2006

Dear English Colleague,

You should already have received a letter notifying you of the upcoming IMPAC meetings on November 19, in Los Angeles, for those in southern California, and on January 21, in San Francisco, for English faculty in northern California. At this time, when both the California State University and the University of California are about to implement new programs for our English majors to transfer to their respective campuses, it is important that we share information and recommend ways to help our English majors successfully transfer.

These meetings will provide the most current information about CSU’s Lower Division Transfer Patterns (LDTP) project and UC’s “Streamlining” project. Faculty from the community colleges, CSU, and UC will discuss what changes we might consider implementing to better prepare our students for transfer. We will also review the course descriptors for World Literature I and II and course objectives for English 1A (CAN 2), both recommended by last year’s IMPAC groups.

Topics we will discuss include the following:
1. Articulation of courses, especially survey courses
2. Improvement of the mechanics of articulation
3. Identification of specified competencies
4. CSU’s Teacher preparation program for English majors
5. CSU Requirements for single-subject English teaching credential
6. Whether the English discipline should meet in the future in more local groups centered around individual university campuses
7. How the English discipline serves students in other majors

We strongly believe that the faculty-to-faculty meetings of the IMPAC project provide opportunities for increased understanding of how each segment of higher education, as well as individual campuses, serves our English majors. We further believe that this understanding leads to ways to improve the alignment between community college preparation and requirements of the universities for English majors, thereby improving the preparation for our transfer students and increasing the prospects for their success.

Please plan on sending one or two representatives to the IMPAC meeting in your region. Remember, the IMPAC project will reimburse you for your expenses.

Mark Snowhite
English Lead
